What is Shoestring Studio?

Shoestring Studio is a membership-based workspace serving painters, draftsmen, illustrators, and other artists in need of workspace, community, and shared resources. Our primary mission is to provide affordable, accessible workspace for artists in Crown Heights and the greater Brooklyn area.

Regularly occurring events include two weekly Figure Drawing sessions on Wednesday and Sunday, a monthly critique night and monthly Brooklyn Draw Jam.

We are open five days a week, Wednesday through Sunday, from noon until ten pm. Our sister space, Shoestring Press, serving printmakers of all stripes, welcomes Shoestring Studio members to use its printmaking facilities, and is conveniently located just across Classon Avenue.

Shoestring Studio offers classes in painting, drawing, illustration, comic book arts and a theory & practice series. Classes are small, focused on providing individualized attention. Our staff includes professional working artists and illustrators. Enrollment is open to the public, and Shoestring members enjoy 50% off classes.

Map and Territory: new work by Madeleine Boucher, Robynne Heymans, Jacqui LeBoutillier, and Sarah Toth

Opening March 24, 2017, 7-11pm, at Shoestring Studio

Shoestring Studio is proud to present an exhibition of maps, charting both imagined space and fragmented, distorted real geography.

"Map and Territory" opens March 24, and will be on view at Shoestring Studio during open studio hours, Wednesday through Sunday, 12pm-10pm, until April 14.

What makes taking a class with us different?

We prioritize experience-basedhands-on learning and give our students a great deal of independence to choose their own projects—mastering the basics is important but we're also big proponents of experimentation and multi-media work. We also ramp up quickly: within your first session, expect to cover the fundamentals and start to master the techniques by doing.  Last but not least, we often supply many materials that other studios don't, so that you can get working right away.

All classes are open to the community, but Shoestring members receive 50% off any class. We offer this substantial discount to our members because we want you to be able to dive in to any class that interests you, and translate those new skills into new projects.
